![]() I don't need to have the servers bonjour'd to access them. That said I set up the same concept on my server lab project at home and it is quick to connect. We have to physically type in the connection, annoying at best so I find that by dragging the directories I use most to my side bar, makes it more convenient to get the files I need. I'd also like to point out that at our office (a world wide organization), they don't advertise the SMB shares. Im a MAC geek and Ubuntu Command Line Server enthusiast. It's essentially the same without all the messing around installing software you don't need to take up resources on your server. Then when you command-K smb://yourserver.local// the drive mounts and there is the folder(directory) sitting right there, just drag it to your sidebar and then any time you need to log in, just click it. Plop all your shares in that master directory and make sure your smb.conf file is also pointing to the shares. com if you have the luxury of pointing a domain name to your server. ![]() Name the master directory ( yourserver.local) or. I can still use Cmd+K to get to the smb shares, but I find this less preferable, because I want to make it easy to use for non technical people.Īvahi didn't work for me due to what I am running on my server and frankly whilst it is nice to see your network share pop up on the Finder Sidebar, a workaround to not installing avahi is to create a master share directory(Folder) then plop all your shares in it. When I click on the server icon in the navigation bar, I only see the afp shares, no smb to be seen. When netatalk and samba+avahi are both running, it seems like netatalk hides any other bonjour stuff on the same host. Samba does not have built-in bonjour support, but with the help of avahi, it's possible to advertise your smb shares through bonjour as well, and they show up in the Finder's navigation bar as well (awesome!). Netatalk has built-in bonjour support, so if you run netatalk, the afp shares show up nicely in Finder (great!). I would like all shares, AFP and SMB to be accessible from a server icon in the finder navigation bar. netatalk, avahi and samba are the packages that I'm using and they're not playing nice with each other. ![]() It use to be somewhat difficult to have Filesystems on an Ubuntu system show up on the Mac Finder the same way that other Mac Filesystems would show up.I'm trying to create a fileserver/timecapsule combo server out of my new raspberry pi (Raspbian), and it's not going as well as I'd like. There has been the Open Source Unix implementation of the Apple File System (afp) but for a long time the Ubuntu packages were not properly configured to work transparently with modern (Snow Leopard) Mac OS X. One blog post, HowTo: Make Ubuntu A Perfect Mac File Server And Time Machine Volume did a great job going through all the steps needed to build Netatalk from source and configure it to work very transparently with Ubuntu releases of the past. DEBIAN NETATALK HOW TOĪlso we’ll see how to make it so that the Ubuntu instance will show up as an ssh server as well.īut with the Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid release, the Netatalk that is in the Ubuntu repository is built and configure to support transparent Apple File Protocol based file sharing.īut there are a few configuration issues, mainly with the Unix implementation of Bonjour resource discovery protocol, that still needs to be done to make it so you can see your Ubuntu Filesystems on your Mac’s Finder like other Macintosh instances. You will need to install the following packages onto your Ubuntu 10.4 instance. This assumes that you already did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.4 and used the update manager to bring it up to date. ![]() If you have already installed some of these, it should not be a problem. I can’t believe that ubuntu doesn’t install an ssh server by default. This is not needed to use netatalk but I wanted to make ssh and netatalk to work and be available via bonjour. Then you’ll need to set up your authorized keys on the ubuntu server. In your home directory do the following: mkdir -p. # Set the permissions to only allow your user to access the. ssh Install Netatalk sudo apt-get install netatalk Configure Netatalk ssh directory and files in thereĬhmod -R og-rwx. You don’t need to change any of the configuration files for netatalk. The defaults will enable the sharing of your home directory. If you want to share any additional filesystems from your Ubuntu instance to your Macs, you can add them to the /etc/netatalk/fault. To something like: ~/ "$h_$u Home Directory" options:upriv, usedots You may want to change the default last item in /etc/netatalk/fault from: ~/ "Home Directory" That file has explanations of al the options.
